Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. Accidents Happen Trailer

I can’t explain why I am absolutely enthralled with this trailer but it does exude a certain sense of humor that resonates with me and makes the best case why people should try and find out more about this little movie with just a hint of man ass.

The opening just feels like the cozy 80’s where there was no Internet, where people still went to drive-ins as these outdoor entertainment venues were in the throws of dying out completely, and where movies depicted youths, not as the Disney-like cut outs they are today, but showed them for the rabble-rousers they could be. That they ought to be.

Director Andrew Lancaster just drops us wholly into this world of the Conway family, a pack of individuals who I really would have liked meeting back in the day. From a kid who messes with their family’s night out at the movies, a mother who was a wet hot mess in the kitchen, and from another kid who is shown taking a slow-mo baseball to the face I am plumb in love with these people.

The music is jaunty, upbeat.

Geena Davis, who I haven’t been much into since 1991’s Thelma and Louise, actually displays some sauciness in delivering only a few lines here but they absolutely catch my attention as they’re genuinely funny. The music downshifts a little, long enough to display all the festivals that have wanted this movie included in its schedule, but we’re right back into the hilarity with scenes of ski masked streaking and boys who remove street lamp light bulbs in order to start rocketing them at one another on a quiet night in the suburbs. Simply put, this trailer just feels like the more funny flip side to Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm.

Whereas Ice Storm explored the troubled nuances of a few families this movie looks to not only capture the realness of one nuclear unit’s struggle to make it but the trailer just sells the hell out of its premise in a way that doesn’t feel manufactured. The ending, as well, just takes the momentum the trailer built up and literally just explodes with charisma and genuinely good marketing that you wonder why you haven’t heard more about this movie before right now. I am smitten with these people.

Desert Son Trailer

Getting left for dead in the middle of a desert is certainly one way to start a story about some hooligans who take pity on a wandering boy who has no place left to go and who capitulates to the will of his protectors, going on a crime spree in order to survive.

But I’m getting ahead of myself here. Directors James Mann and Brandon Nicholas have made a movie that seems to explore the ways adolescence can take wicked turns at any moment. True, like the trailer opens with, not many find themselves being such a cretin that the only solution is to dump your lazy bones on the side of a nameless, shapeless dirt road in the desert but it is intriguing in a way that makes you want to see more of what is going on here.

It’s a little wild to see how anyone could have thought this was a believable pretense to start a movie, but the trailer eschews any voiceover to help provide a little context. Nor does it include any words to help at least give us some bearing of what is happening. Truth be told, it works well for me in that the people who made this film don’t want to tell too much.

The tonal shifts this trailer makes, when the boy stumbles upon the alpha dog who questions why he wasn’t left to die in the desert, incrementally takes you from disbelief that someone would throw away a perfectly good white boy to momentary panic when you get the feeling this movie will not be a simple coming of age film but one that feels a little more dangerous.

There isn’t anything to indicate our protagonist is a party to the violence but the music and the moment that’s created when all three of our players don plastic supermarket bags on their heads as masks, and the alpha is carrying around an ax inside a house that he clearly wants to use, is perfect for a little movie like this.

Yeah, there is a little bombastic, blow-hardy overacting going on at the tail end of this but, overall, this at least has the feeling of a movie that could be something of a winner in the thriller genre with some rather unconventional ideas. Consider my interest piqued.

Boogie Woogie Trailer

I don’t know. Is it just me or is this just trying really hard to be amusing in a smug sort of way?

It only recently came up, I believe, when some ad exec was talking about commercials in the Super Bowl and about when sex is used in an advert it usually means the product is no good. If you believe that presupposition, then, and overlay that to things like trailers that do nothing but depend on sexuality to sell its stories, you can see this movie is probably all sorts of awful. I don’t mean to cast aspersions on the content of the movie but this trailer is just trying way too hard.

As well, I don’t know if you can fully appreciate what director Duncan Ward’s vision is of a love triangle times three or four in this trailer, though. What’s even more interesting about this film is that it is based on Danny Moynihan’s novel, he also produced the screenplay, and was Publishers Weekly review that said this story, a satirical yarn about the New York art scene, lacks “a story line” and that, “the result is a novel that works as satire, but fails to quite cohere as fiction.” A ringing endorsement for it to from page to screen if I ever heard one.

This is important when you consider the start of this trailer which talks about all the players in this twisted web of the art world gone positively nutty! You have a handful of these people in various states of undress or positioning, the story not really being explained, as you see how saucy and licentious this movie looks like it is trying to be. It’s just pathetic, it’s naked ambition to titillate in order for you to care what’s happening in front of you.

What I don’t understand, as a viewer, is why I should care about anyone in this movie. The opening pretty much lays it out with all the crisscross/backstabbing going on, which is almost everyone we’re introduced to, but the problem with not caring about any of these people is compounded by the awful rock beat, if you can even call it that, that is embedded beneath it all. The music sounds like a placeholder you would stick in front of a podcast about advances in Tupperware and it just grates as you try and really give this trailer a chance.

The only real redeeming thing about this trailer is at about the 50 second mark. It’s a moment we get that shows how this is all very obnoxious, the art game that’s being satirized in this movie, and it almost redeems the first part of what we were shown but the problem I have is it did a horrible job in setting this movie up as a satirical expose of this twisted form of business.

We’re not really let into the joke of what this all about until it’s too late and even at a minute seventeen seconds it was longer than I wanted to spend with these twits if this is a representative sample of how the movie is going to go.

Great Kills Road Trailer

If you didn’t know what this movie was about the trailer would still be great as a preview that doesn’t give you anything but clues to a movie that feels a little but like In America.

I appreciate that this trailer does something bold: no one utters a word and there hardly any words ever expressed on the camera besides an “I’m sorry” scribbled on a postcard that seems to be from New York. Confusing at first, yes, but when you realize that IMBD says this is a film about “The father of a severely mentally handicapped boy goes to find his son’s run away mother in her native New York” everything makes a little bit more sense.

However, beyond just not having any words the trailer blurs the line between fictional narrative and documentary by not tipping its hand. Yes, it is fiction but you have to wonder how many people would think otherwise if shown what’s here as the filming just gives the sense it’s actually following this one man.

The opening sequence sets up the rest of the trailer perfectly. You have a guy who seems overwhelmed at the sight of New York. A true “fish out of water” tale that has played out in many movies that take foreigners and plop them in this metropolis which seems to be the de facto proving ground for, and representative sample of, Americans.

The vérité style in which it is shot just captures that sense of overwhelming confusion and sensory overload for someone who might have come from a country the size of a small state. Our protagonist seems affected by the dizzying directions one can go, what one can experience, and sometimes the confusing loneliness you can feel in a city teeming with millions.

The musical score is minimal yet evocative in a way that makes me feel on edge and wholly a part of this guy’s journey.

The very last moments of this trailer flash up the log line that “Doing what’s best…isn’t always what’s right” but what’s bold about making this statement is that, still, it doesn’t have anything to do with this film’s narrative. It seems confusing, sure, but the trailer is make well enough that it triggers a sense of curiosity about what this movie is about. Knowing it drove me batty enough to check out its premise just shows how well it evokes questions, interest. A win for a very small film from Tjebbo Penning.

Showgirl Trailer

This trailer is pure laughing gas.

A quote from original Showgirl actress, Rena Riffel, about her feature Showgirl which is not affiliated with the trailer that many saw a few weeks ago for what many think is Showgirls 2:

My film is titled SHOWGIRL, being that I am the last and only “showgirl” still keeping that flame alive. It’s sort of a…”What ever happened to Penny Hope?” - fifteen years later, story. SHOWGIRL is my take on what becomes of a thirty-something year-old stripper who is still obsessed with dancing and fame.

Yeah, she’s ten pounds worth of crazy.

I don’t know which one of you out there were demanding we see a “Whatever happened to…” movie based on this woman’s character but not only did your letter, which we all can assume would glow like a radioactive map of Hawaii if we put it under a black light with the “love” you smeared on it, get answered but we all now have this trailer in existence. For that, humanity is a little better because of it.

I am not sure if this is a big joke but this has to be one of the worst trailers I’ve ever had to sit through. That’s not to say it pained me as, believe me, there is a ton of awesome horribleness in this thing, but I just had to share my pain with the rest of the world.

First off, the trailer starts with a synth beat that ought to be back in the 90’s, hanging out with the wannabe’s who thought that wearing Cross Colours made them look hip and not like the pack of Crayola’s they were, along with an awkward opening that suggests this woman before is just a cracked out psychopath. The audio drops out weirdly, the green screen backgrounds of the stage she’s purportedly “performing” on look like it was put together by someone learning tricks your 12 year-old can do with iMovie, and at about the 28 second mark is where you get all you need to know about this movie. Seriously, from transvestites, midgets, women getting slapped, to a voiceover that not only is awkward to follow the narrative is just lost somewhere in a cesspool of awfulness.

I mean, I get that here is a woman who wants to make a go at being a showgirl and the initial lure of Showgirls was that here was a trashy movie that intentionally showcased the seedy and obnoxious lives of these shattered human beings but this is something else. This is just flat out horrible.

Four Lions Trailer - Without you seeing it, I can’t explain why a movie about suicide bombers works so well in this trailer. Yes, the subject matter is loaded like a pair of shotgun shells but I think the way it handles the comedy elevates this from an interesting premise to fascinating film.
The Mechanic Trailer - I realize Jason Statham is an action movie star. What I also realized, after watching this trailer, is that is like every other action movie he’s ever been in. You could cut and paste entire clips of his oeuvre into this trailer and it would still flow. I only wish I was kidding.
Eat, Pray, Love Trailer - I thought about having a go at this trailer like an over caffeinated fat kid with the pinata stick, attacking Senor Spider-Man with wild abandon, but this trailer knows what it is, who its audience is, and who it needs to reach. This movie is not for me and the marketing here shows why.
Parallel Lines Trailer #2 - I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I am a short story fiend. I love films like Trick ‘r Treat, Creepshow, Paris, je t’aime, and the like and this trailer compresses the best part of why short can still be exciting. This leaves you with so many questions but, aesthetically, it’s telling you everything you need to know.
Megamind Teaser Trailer - This trailer is trying to be funny and wacky and goofy but it just ends up being a teaser that makes me feel that it’s hiding something. Pixar, ever the yardstick, has shown you don’t have to be obnoxious in order to sell people, you just have to be good. I’m reserving judgment until it learns to calm down a little.
The Greatest Trailer - Ok, class, here is a textbook example of showing way too much. I don’t know what’s worse, having the entire movie explained to be in less than two minutes or having the movie explained to me in two minutes and me not feeling the need to see how it ends because I think I’ve seen the whole thing. Some modesty would have served this trailer well.
Predators Trailer - I hate to turn to the peanut gallery on this one but what do you all think of this? Me, I feel like this franchise is played out, burnt out, and deserves to be left alone and the trailer just confirms my suspicions that it will play well for a weekend and then sink like a millstone. There just doesn’t seem to be anything special here but maybe I’m wrong. It would be a nice surprise if I was.

Drew stars along ex-boyfriend Justin Long in the new movie He’s Just Not That Into You – and the stunner insists they are still friends, reports Us Magazine .

Possibly, because he followed one of Drew’s rules for ending a doomed relationship: honesty.

"Not telling me? That pisses me off more than anything," she says.

We've seen some great animation in the recent past, but damn. The Czech film Kuky Returns looks like a wonderful blend of Spike Jonze, Jan Svankmajer, the Muppets and probably a couple others. (Such as the video game Little Big Planet, even.) But despite all those influences at play, it also looks very much like its own thing. Watch the fantastic trailer after the break. (And while some viewers are seemingly captured by the expression of the inner child in this trailer, or some similar nonsense, I could really give a damn about being shown the world through the eyes of a child. But seeing things brought to life and given personality in just a few frames of movement? That is magic.)

Kuky Returns is the story of a boy six Ondra, who suffers from asthma, and so on “health reasons” must be off his favorite toy - a pink bear kuky. When mom Kukyho throw in the trash, it will work Ondrová fantasy in which experienced Kukyho adventure in an unknown natural world. Kuky Returns is an adventure, a poetic family story in which the main role, however, take the heroes of children’s fantasy worldwhere the only heroes are the puppets. “I thought then change the scale and place the story directly into the microcosm, his protagonists make small enough that the roots of the tree decorations, light in the atmosphere made raspberry leaves, fuzz was all the props and extras natural insects,” says Jan Sverak, who is also the author scenarios and as with most of his recent films also the producer.

Aquamarine is a film about two best friends called Claire and Hailey they grew up together and went everywhere together then all of a sudden Hailey's mother got a new job somewhere else so she has to move soon so they tried to figure out a way that Hailey would be able to stay but they are not having much luck with it.

Until one night there was a big rain storm and when they woke up the next morning and went outside there pool was full of water but that's not all that they found they were standing at one side of the pool and at the other end of the pool say saw a fin coming out of the water they thought that it might have been a fish but as it came closer to them they realized that it was a women at first they didn't believe what they were seeing but it turned out that they were right but it wasn't just a women she was a mermaid.

Her name was Aquamarine but they called her Aqua she didn't know anything about humans she didn't even know what feet where or what dancing was when she came out of the water and dried her fin the fin would disappear and she would get legs but she didn't know how to use them at first but she started to get the hang of it then she explained how she swam away from home so that she could find a man to fall in love with her and if she could do that in a certain amount of time she would become human forever.

she said to Claire and Hailey that if they helped her she would grant them one wish so they agreed to help her as they were going to use there wish so that Hailey could stay but Aqua didn't get someone to fall in love with her in that time she found a guy that really liked her but did not love her so then the girls didn't get there wish so they got split up and Hailey had no choice to leave and go with her mum. This is a great film for the whole family to watch.

The Mascots of the Olympics!
Okay, so unless you've been living under a rock like a pertader-bug, you know that in a little over 24-hours the opening ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympiad will be happening. And guess who is just as excited as heck to watch it?!?! That's right! I may be super-cynical and dislike all things mainstream and pedestrian (not to mention my steadfast hatred of all televised sports) but I get so thoroughly jazzed for the Olympics. I think it's the aggressive competition since I'm from a country full of Olympic underdogs; Canada's not like the US, where you KNOW you're going to win 99% of the events (both Summer and Winter, you douchebags) but we're not some rinky-dink tiny-town country like The People's Republic of Matti-Matti where you have one delegate and they have a better chance of finding a finger in their Coke than even so much as looking at the winner's podium. Also this Olympiad is in my country, bitches! We are going to deliver so much rashy red pwnage that your balls will burn for weeks (well...at Hockey. The other sports will probably domashize us pretty hard. But Hockey...we've definitely got that one in the bag).

Anyways, I thought it would be fun to go back and take a look at my favourite part of the Olympics: the mascots! Santo Dios, the mascots! Is there nothing shittier or more thrown-together-last-minute looking than the Olympic mascot? The best part is they have at least 4 years to create something cute and they usually end up failing so hard their designs ruin their careers. So let's take a look back at the Hits and Misses of the Olympic Mascots!

HIGHER, FASTER, STRONGER! (the best of the best)

NAME: Waldi
SPECIES: Dog (specifically Wiener)
COUNTRY: Munich, Germany
YEARS ACTIVE: Summer 1972
First up we have Waldi, the adorable wienerdog from Germany. I like when a country goes "We're known for Lederhosen and wienerdogs...fuck it, just make the mascot a wienerdog wearing lederhosen". It's a good thing they did cute too, because what's the first thing you think of when someone says Germany? Hitler, exactly. And what's the exact opposite of Hitler? PUPPIES!!1!

Oh lord, SEE WHAT I MEAN?!?! The Fuwa were like the LOLcats of the mascot world: short, cat-like, adorable hats, Asian. I wouldn't have accepted anything less from the continent that brought us Hello Kitty and Shiba-Inus.

SPECIES: Some kind or Urban Legend, Sasquatch, Mythical Sea-bear

Thank god my country got our mascots right for this year's Winter Olympiad. We could have easily (and lazily) just called up the creator of Chilly Beach and asked them (whom I'm assuming is Satan) to create a forgettable, ugly mascot. Instead, we called up Meomi and got three (4 if you count Mukmuk the Downs Syndrome Marmot) adorable happy fake animals. That's right! Canada is known for the beaver and house cats, so we needed to make up some animals. And by "make up some animals", I of course mean "throw some scarves on a couple of cast-off Northern-looking Hello Kitty characters".

True story! Roni was actually a real raccoon that died moments before the games were to begin, so they whipped up this stupid looking human-with-the-head-of-a-raccoon creature to replace him. Know what would have been a better replacement? FINDING ANOTHER RACCOON. It's not like they're rare - fuck, I know of 3 completely different raccoons that dig through my garbage every night. Take one of mine!

Whoah, slow down there buddy - you look like you're about to roofie my drink. Vučko is exactly like how I stereotype guys from Bosnia/Herzegovina: pushy Eastern-European Eurotrash who are about 13 years behind on fashion, 20 year behind on popular music, and so new to a life outside crippling poverty they hoard all their toilet paper and soap.
Note: NONE of what I just said made any sense.

Ugh. Fuck. This is why you don't let the animators at Disney design your mascot. You catch them at the worst time (right after the 1960s Disney Golden Age, but right before the 1990s Disney Renaissance - aka Oliver and Company time) so all they can do is pull together scraps of Disney characters to form a shitty bald eagle. Plus, he's modeled after Uncle Sam who, in essence, is an American mascot. That's right - you made a mascot based on another mascot. And you named him THE EXACT SAME NAME. Someone got paid handsomely for this, btw. Remember that when you're eating Ramen Noodles for the 600th time this year.

NAME: Hidy and Howdy

It wouldn't be fair of me to make fun of Olympic mascots and give 2 glowing reviews to Canadian ones, so here is where I take an unbiased approach to explaining why Hidy and Howdy are two pieces of FAIL. First off, they made two mascots that couldn't been seen without each other, ever. I liked it better when it was called Donnie and Marie Osmond. Second, what the hell is with the primary colour scheme? Was our budget that low? Thirdly, Hidy and Howdy are basically redneck hillbillies: they live in Calgary (farmland), their cowboy hats are permanently affixed to their heads, they're brother and sister but have this creepy, incestuous relationship. Welcome to Canada!

Seriously, why didn't they pick a mascot that was a kangaroo? Or at least a kangaroo drinking a can of Fosters (that would have been amazing).

There's only one Powder in my life, and it isn't this rabbit. Coal? Is that offensive to Black people? Why didn't they just go with Brown Thing, Hoppy and Grizzle. Just as lame, just as forgettable.

This was seriously the best Italy could do. Know who would have been two way better mascots? That's right - the pillars of Italian heritage and hard-work themselves: MARIO AND LUIGI. They'd be perfect. They're both Italian, their coveralls reflect the colors of the Italian flag, their bushy moustaches are comical. Plus, with instant recognition, people would actually have given a shit about the Turin Olympics (wasn't it like the least-watched Winter games or something? Maybe I just didn't care). Regardless, don't Neve and Gliz look like total simpletons?

Never has an Olympic mascot held so much widespread contempt than the Atlanta Whatzit, an image of pure hatred. You know, the funny thing is when I first saw Izzy back in 1996 (I won't admit my age, but let's just say I was really into getting my period for the first time) I thought to myself "Wow. That is just so terrible." Hello! A dumb teenage idiot could realize that Izzy was a bad decision! Who the hell green-lit this monstrosity?! I found this article about Lady Gaga and I found it to be pretty interesting drawing comparisons to David Bowie, Queen, and every other glam rock star of the 70s and 80s, so I thought I would post it here for you guys. Enjoy!

See, GaGa came along with Iggy Pop’s sluttishness, Bowie’s pretention and Lou’s Warhol wet-dream and decided to make music that was equally pompous and knowingly dumb as the aforementioned canonised rock stars. However, GaGa suffers from being too brash and too brazen in her quest for fame. She’s hungry for it to the point where it’s borderline perverted.Between the grizzled threesome of Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and David Bowie, bad sex, worse drugs, androgyny, alienation and good times found a good home in song. All of these artists went through pretty lean times whilst people tried to cotton on to what was going on. Iggy was too dumb and too blond. Bowie was too hungry for fame and Lou was just plain weird and distant.

These artists all struggled and plugged away until Warhol effectively sponsored the Velvets like a football team, Iggy got his dick out and Bowie stopped trying to look like a Yardbird and decided to look like a sex nymph from space. Then, the world slowly began to realise what the deal was.
If only they’d known that, if they’d formed like Voltron to make one super freak, they would’ve conquered the world in a chicken minute.
Of course, these days, we’re too jaded and cynical to let anyone strut around the place straight off the bat like they own it. Pop stars still need to earn their stripes if Whitey is going to start singing their praises.

That’s why “Whitey” – is on the run from Lady GaGa.

See, GaGa came along with Iggy sluttishness, Bowie’s pretention and Lou’s Warhol wet-dream and decided to make music that was equally pompous and knowingly dumb as the aforementioned canonised rock stars. However, GaGa suffers from being too brash and too brazen in her quest for fame. She’s hungry for it to the point where it’s borderline perverted.

Whilst it’s okay to be, say, a fame-hungry music mogul like McGee or McLaren, some star-chasing popstar is always going to be dismissed as throwaway trash. In GaGa, we’ve finally been granted a pop star who can play the game and, if you want, pretend that the neediness is borne from some art-school statement… something that a punk won’t ever have the audacity to confess too.

Excitement doesn’t come too thick or fast in the world of music and when it does, it’s feverishly grabbed at in chunks of flesh. GaGa is chastised in the dreariest way possible for offering, quite literally, the skin we desire. However, what Whitey can’t accept is that she’s doing a thing that is still so admired in the likes of Iggy & Co.

At long last, after years of landfill shmindie and anti-pop groups in white suits obediently awaiting the key-change, we have someone who is single-handedly trying to redefine the very notion of what a pop star can be in The Noughties and beyond. As a project, it’s bold and brilliant and going to require a whole lotta shaking of the tail-feather.

Whitey has for too long, sat around talking about the lack of influential pop stars on the planet. I was one of those guys too. Where are the likes of The Beatles, casting a hand over the whole of popular culture and making people readdress the way they go about their business? You want a maverick spirit?

We’re slap-bang in the middle of a pop era which is seeing singers knowingly redefining themselves and creating personas. Every single one of them is aping GaGa’s moves. Pop’s most important people have fallen like trees to be more like The First Lady of Pop.Beyonce wanted a piece of the GaGa action and Rihanna went from being the archetypal ghetto hustler to someone between the two. Between the three, we’ve got the glitterball adrenaline rush of the embryonic days of Glam when Bowie, T-Rex and Roxy Music.

Whilst “Whitey” will heap praise on the Sainted rock of yore with the usual Trad. Arr. spiel of wondrous androgyny and inventive, hooky pop, GaGa arrives similarly to her own fanfare with the weirds and everyone dismisses it as cheap, whorish and Rizla-thin.Whilst it may be all of those things, Whitey won’t let on that those three things are three of the greatest things a pop-star can be.

Speaking as someone who caught the opening show of GaGa’s Monster Ball Tour, I could draw the parallel between her and the rock of ages. She out-Queened MUSE and out-weirded Marilyn Manson. Dancers vomiting paint, flaming pianos and 15ft high Angler fish all appeared out of a show so dazzling that only a fool would deny the bombastic fun… which, incidentally, is music’s raison d’être.

Muse probably collectively sneered at Madonna when she started to aim high with her pointed bra way back when, only to find themselves looking back (from a safe-distance) and sagely nodding in agreement that she was “pretty good” and how “we could do with another one of her like right now”.

However, GaGa is here and now and to be celebrated and enjoyed. In ‘Just Dance’, we’ve got her call to arms. It’s her ‘Into The Groove’. It isn’t a mark of her talent, but rather, the track that was released to acclimatise us all at the entrance of The Haus of GaGa. It’s simple and direct and echoing the original sentiment of rock & roll.

It wouldn’t be until ‘Bad Romance’ that everyone would suddenly begin to understand what GaGa was doing. The kids went wild for it and the older fans went from adoring to infatuated. If Whitey could have let the pop-snobbery go for one second, they would have realised that GaGa was effectively realising the future of pop as imagined by Human League when they made Dare.

She sends that great message of “dance like there’s no-one watching, sing like there’s no-one listening and fuck like you’re being filmed”. Something you won’t hear in the pointless noodling of Rock Critic Approved Animal Collective.
And so, if Whitey appreciates the trash-aesthetic, he certainly won’t accept that there’s something deeper to be found. To the braying know-it-all, she’s little more than some dumb-bitch in hotpants singing Europop. However, that’s the opinion of someone skating the surface like a cultural pond-fly. You don’t have to dig deep to find an entire world of scarred-bravado, melodramatic camp and vulnerability. While “Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah, roma-roma-ma-ah, gaga-ooh-la-la” is tossed to the side by idiots to short-sighted to see that a line like that could’ve been from the frenzied pen of Little Richard, elsewhere, she’s creating great rock & roll lyrics.

The words of ‘Poker Face’ in a retro-futuristic setting are easy to miss, yet split it from the irresistible synthpop and it’s a classic shit-kicker ‘50s greaser county track. “I wanna hold em’ like they do in Texas, please… fold em’, let em’ hit me, raise it baby, stay with me… Luck and intuition, play the cards with spades to start.” Elsewhere, “Some men may follow me… but you choose death and company”, which would be praised to the point of parody if it came from the mouth of Morrissey or Dylan.
Like Carole King before her, GaGa is a one woman Brill Building.

Of course, all of that is missed because the easiest thing to do in the world is to hate a famous pop-star. GaGa is weird and an attention seeker… sure… but you gotta imagine that pop-conservatists were exactly the same when Ziggy Stardust emerged from his glittery pod and played guitar with Weird and Gilly.

GaGa is more than just a famous singer-songwriter. Whitey’s brain scrambles at the mere mention of her name. They don’t get it… they’re not even getting near the ballpark of it. All the while, those who have climbed on board are reliving that great moment in music when fans stopped caring about what some dumb critic or nay-saying catholic record buyer thought and hopped on the train dressed in weird clothes and strange make-up. As last seen in Glam, Friday night conjecture is out of the window in favour of the beautiful and weird blossoming of the suppressed thoughts in people’s minds. T-Rex got boys in feather boas. GaGa is bringing back punk S&M and mirrored tits.

So next time you hear the dumb lyric of your favourite garage punk 45 or listen to anything produced by Vince Clarke… the next time you dig the strange Phil Spector track or thrill at the oddballery of Grace Jones, ask yourself why you aren’t fizzing with undiluted excitement at a star that combines all the weird forward-thinking aesthetic and battered and bruised tenderness of a pop-star that matches all those things on her own terms and managed to shit out a pop-art Faberge egg the size of a juggernaut.

The suicide blonde train-wreck has got the kids onside and Whitey on the run – some of whom will invariably relent and accept that we’ve got The Real Deal on our hands. So big is Lady GaGa’s star is that it doesn’t need defending. The only people who need addressing are those dismissing her act on principle.

You really ought to enjoy this phenomenon while you can because we’re not due one for another 20 years. While Whitey skulks with his John and Beverley Martyn long-players, the rest of us will just dance, “half psychotic, sick, hypnotic” (and if that’s not a garage punk sentiment, I don’t know what is).

Wanna know where all the proper rock stars have gone? Well there’s one who has decided to camp in the pop hemisphere and you were too precious to even notice.

The Oscars are less than a week away which will wrap up award season 2010. A few months ago, I asked the ever talented Joanna Schlip, Physicians Formula celebrity makeup artist, for the top 5 red carpet color trends we could expect to see this season, and here's what she had to say:

1) Faye Dunaway – very finished brow, nude lip, glowy cheek, big lashes

2) Neutral face with very powerful colored lip – anything from red to fuchsia (will go the full gamut)

3) Healthy glowy skin all over the body – skin will be glowing on arms and legs

4) Everyone will be sporting lashes very flirty and sexy lashes

5) Blushes will be more of deeper peaches, corals and pinks – not so vibrant, but toned down and muted with a matte t-zone – only certain areas will be highlighted, such as the cheekbone, brow bone or bridge of nose.

The forward momentum on casting The First Avenger: Captain America seems to be moving rather slowly. Sure, casting Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull is a great start, but there is still that famously contentious shortlist of possible actors to play Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. That list has had a couple names knocked off, but now there's word that one more has been added: Ryan Phillippe. Meanwhile, Ed Norton is talking about his work with Marvel as the Hulk, and where he might fit into the studio's long-range plans. HitFix reports that Phillippe is now part of the list that still includes Mike Vogel (She’s Out of My League, Cloverfield), Garret Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Chris Evans (Sunshine) and Wilson Bethel (Generation Kill). That's a much shorter list than had been the case. Phillippe is an interesting choice, but despite the potential crossover confusion with the Fantastic Four films I still ...

That is: he’s not likely to appear in either Thor or Captain America, [per MTV] and that Marvel has other plans that have put a Hulk sequel on the far back burner [per Cinematical].

SuperHeroHype got similar quotes that others have in the last six months: “Yeah [I have communication with Marvel] to some degree, through my agents. But there’s always been an agenda I think to unspool a lot of the Marvel Universe and then come back… I think they’ve got a lot of new stuff that they’re rolling out and then I think at some point they’re going to figure out how they want to get around to ‘Avengers.’”

Based on that, the only Marvel project that Norton seems likely to be a part of in the near future is The Avengers, and that isn’t even that close. But he did tell SuperHeroHype that the primary person he had issues with at Marvel is now gone (make your guesses there) and that could make things easier on his working relationship with the studio in the future.
